课程内容:
From 1820 until 1828, Hegel offered a series of lectures on aesthetics titled “Aesthetics or Philosophy of Art.” They were an immense success and were attended by hundreds of people. In them, Hegel worked out more specifically the general ideas on art that he first introduced in his 1807 Phenomenology of Spirit. The anti-Hegelian art historian, Ernst Gombrich, credited these lectures with more or less creating the field of art history. In them, Hegel tried to make his ideas more clear for a general audience, and they have remained among his most popular works. We will be looking at the lectures in light of some key Hegelian ideas, especially those of self-consciousness, sociality, alienation, progress, and why (or whether) Hegel thinks that art in all its forms (architecture, sculpture, painting, music, and literature) presents fundamental truths about human agency and life. The special emphasis will be on how Hegel understands art to incorporate some of his key ideas on how to explain key metaphysical conceptions of mind and action. Art, Hegel argues, gives us access to truths about human life that philosophy cannot express but for which philosophy is necessary. In particular, we will look at Hegel’s claim that there are ways in which we can mark progress in art as it develops historically. The lectures on aesthetics display Hegel’s most detailed and clearest thoughts on the nature of modernity and philosophy’s encounter with the specific set of questions that modernity raises.
