The 1st Fudan University PPE International Summer School will start from June 30 to July 4, 2025, at Fudan University. This summer school will focus on the theme “Market Society, Modern State, and Transnational Order”, offering both instruction and in-depth academic discussion.
The contemporary landscape of globalization is undergoing significant transformation. On the one hand, transnational capital flows and market integration have deepened global economic interdependence. On the other hand, the rise of nationalism and frequent geopolitical conflicts have led to the fragmentation of international norms and rules. Amid challenges such as the reorganization of global supply chains, the digital technology revolution, and the climate crisis, the traditional tensions between market logic and state governance are evolving. Simultaneously, the pursuit of national sovereignty and the construction of a transnational order now face entirely new questions. In this era of profound change, rethinking the concepts of market society, the modern state, and transnational order has become a pressing global concern.
The inaugural Fudan University PPE International Summer School will bring together renowned scholars from the University of Exeter, the National Research University Higher School of Economics (Russia), and Fudan University for five days of intensive teaching and exchange on these crucial topics. The program highlights the interdisciplinary and cutting-edge nature of the PPE field. Scholars will approach the theme from three disciplinary perspectives:
· From political science, they will explore the legitimacy of modern states, the evolving boundaries of traditional sovereignty, and the new roles of nation-states in global governance.
· From philosophy, they will reflect on the ethical limits of market societies and examine the relationship between national sovereignty and the development of humanity as a whole.
· From economics, they will go beyond the binary paradigm of “state vs. market” to address the pressing challenges of global economic slowdown.
Eligibility: The summer school is open to undergraduate students in PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) and related fields such as political science, economics, and philosophy, both from China and abroad. The program will admit approximately 40 students.
